The Not So Migthy Mongoose
Thursday, October 1st, 2009The popular belief among people is that the cobra and the mongoose are sworn enemies and that in any fight the mongoose always wins. But the truth is somewhat different. So reluctant is the mongoose to engage the cobra in a battle that the Indian snake charmers sometimes stage fights between the two just to see what happens. The quick-footed mongoose is usually able to overpower the slower cobra, and use its sharp teeth to break the cobra’s neck. But when this tactic does not succeed, the mongoose is swiftly killed by the cobra’s venomous bite. Contrary to belief, the mongoose is not immune to snake venom.
